Lived Experience, Leadership, and the Work of Showing Up for People
Every situation has a lesson. Stay until you find it.
The Book
From a Different Angle is a book about lived experience and the lessons hidden inside it. Donovan Tezeno-Parish has spent his career learning a discipline that started long before the job: how to see a situation, and the people in it, from more than one angle, and how to find the lesson in rooms that could have broken him.
From a childhood on the Louisiana coast to the hardest year of his professional life, he shows how the situations most people write off, or walk away from, are often the ones with the most to teach, and how to stay long enough to find it.
Along the way he offers a practical method any leader can use: read what is actually in front of you, test whether the stated problem is the real one, and bring the response the moment needs rather than the one you default to.
“The angle you see a person from decides what you can do for them.”
Written for people leaders, executives, HR professionals, and anyone who aspires to lead people. A book about becoming the leader you needed and never had.
Publication status: Currently in editing. Retailer links and a firm release date will be announced here and to the mailing list.
The Cover Tells the Story
Look closely at the shoes. One holds the same ground before the storm, dry and whole. The other holds it under floodwater. That is the whole book in one image: what you see depends on the angle you stand at.
Notes From the Work
The manuscript is still in edits. In the meantime I write a short essay every other Thursday — the same lens the book is built on, at work in real rooms.

A colleague walked the same relational move into three rooms that needed three different things, and only one room got what it needed. How a leadership strength turns into a ceiling, why range changes how you have the conversation but never whether, and the check that tells you which one your signature move has become.

My recommendation was written, and I sent it up because I wanted my leader to be a thought-partner on it. The message that came back handed the decision straight back to me. This is what trust given early does to a person, and the one call you can hand back this week.

My father was fifty-nine when his body started to give out, and the work did not pause to ask how he slept. This is about the month I led while he was dying, the two kinds of leadership I watched stand side by side, and what I owe anyone whose world has just stopped.
